Are we a socialist nation?

I've been thinking about this for a while. First, a little about me. I don't like to think of my self as a Democrat or Republican. I did however have to declare myself a Republinal when I became the Republican deligate for my district. It made me feel icky (is that a word). I did this because I was a McCain fan.

We have a government funded edicational system. Over half of my property taxes go to fund K-12 schools. Why should I be paying for schools when I have no children? Shouldn't this be private. Let the parents pay to send their kids to school.

We have a government operated fire department. I can call whenever I need them and they will probably be here in less that 10 minutes. Maybe we should pay for a monthy service. We could have competing fire services.

We have a government run police force. And they do a fine job I'm sure .

I can call 911 and just say hi to the government paid person on the other end.

I like to go see a ball game now and then. We even have a new stadium. Actually we have two - both new. Both were build with public funds. Don't you think that the fans and team owners should pay 100% for the priviledge of seeing a game.

What else is out there?

Using this definition, (IMHO) not entirely, but we are surely headed in that direction if certain forces prevail.

I grew up in the vietnam era and saw enough from the anti whatever movement back then. Not much of it was logical to my way of thinking. Capitalism is a pretty good plan so long as u don't meddle with it outside the bounds of maintaining a fair play mentality. It appears to me that what happened in 08 is a direct manifestation of the revolutionary movement of the 60 and 70s. A carefully laid plan that finally came to fruition.

Not sure what it will all turn into but without a course change most of the things we have enjoyed as Americans will fade into something like the mundane existence they have in europe. Was there in the mid 90s and there was one tiny car per family. Professional familys couldn't afford a second or the gas due to the excessive taxes. I am just not into bicycles but I digress.

The Government should be responsible for planning but it seems politicians(both types) play to some one's agenda and only make reactionary decisions. I am fully in agreement with development of better energy technology so that there will be enough gas so that I can drive my Cobra. Good decisions and proper planning shoud result in a future that is better not worse.

Glad I got that off my chest. Now my stripes look better.
