Welders take note....

Hey guys,
I just ran across this link over at Club Cobra that shows what can happen when two or more chemicals found in most garages are mixed. Although the almost fatal event happened as a result of welding, all of us have many, many bottles and cans of all sorts of things to make ours cars go or look better that when mixed can have some very dangerous results. This is definately worth a read of both the link and the back of the next can you pull off the shelf for your next garage project. Keep piling those miles up this summer....

They say you learn something new everyday..... thanks for posting that Bill, I never gave a thought that brake cleaner could put an end to your life under the circumstances mentioned. And with just a wee bit exposure at that!

Good info to have. People have died from just mixing two different toilet cleaners and breathing the fumes. One fairly common way that those of us who play with cars die is from carbon monoxide as it is very easy to pass out from it and doesn't take much. It will accumulate in your blood over time but takes a very long time for you system to get rid of so just going out into the fresh air for a few minutes accomplishes almost nothing. First symtom is sleepiness so if you find that you are becoming sleepy while near a running engine get the heck out and stay out. I fly a small plane and since the heaters of these is an exhaust heatexchanger any cracks can put your life in danger. We keep an indicator with a sensitive chemical hanging on the dash at all times. If the spot turns black it is a warning to land immediately.
