Unique Sidepipe Rumor

I heard a rumor once that Unique offers two versions of their sidepipes - one "quiet" version with extra fiberglass packing, and one "loud" version. Any truth to this? My car is way too quiet, and I want a little more aggressive sound coming out of the pipes.

And yes, I know that I could just email Alan and Maurice, but I hate wasting their time with piddly questions like this, when they could be working on Juan's car...

I have heard of turning the mufflers backwards on the 427 cars for a little more sound. I do not know if they do this a lot or just if you ask for it??? The 289 cars are A LOT quieter than the 427 cars.

There have been several options:

1. a sidepipe with no baffles , looks like a muffler but nothing there, very loud.

2. Fiberglass packing, most common, the quitest.

3. A spiral set of baffles in the muffler, louder than the fiberglass.

Could be more but these are the ones I know about.

I have the spiral flow and they do sound different compared to other big blocks. They are loud, just the way I like it

I wish I could tone mine down they are a "police magnet" I know I don't have the spiral type and they are louder than most but I really don't know if they have fiberglass or not. I did buy a couple of Vortex Cones to tone it down a dB or two but have not had the time to fiddle with reworking them so I can insert them through the pipe exits.

Any other ideas??

I know that mine are pretty loud.....just the way I like them

And since I had them chromed they seem to have a "tinnier" but deeper, raspier, popping sound to them.

But then again it could be because I built a stroked cleveland with a big a$$ cam[:P]

Yeah, I've always wondered how my mild engine could actually be the root of my sound dilemma. Maybe I should wait to switch pipes until I get a new motor built.

My original sidepipes were the quite ones, fiberglass packed.

I changed to the Spiral type about a 18 months ago, they are less restrictive and sound really good. You can get them through Unique or buy the spiral type and have them installed on your old sidepipes, then you would have to have the pipes ceramic coated again.

Lobak in California makes some good ones, 925-6060198, most of them would be 24 - 26 inch long. About $100.00 a pair.

Lobak does not have a website, but I did talk to the owner last week, they have two different inside diameters , 3/4" and 1 1/2",. which ones do you have? 70.00 each
I think I am going to get the ones from Unique(670.00 with the spiral option) uncoated, and then send them out to be coated. That way I have a spare set lying around just in case!

Did you buy them from Lobak or have them done through Unique? They use the lobak for the spiral core option, but Maurice told me they were about 18" long, John at Lobak said 24 to 28

Mine came from Unique but they are longer than 18", I like the 24-28" ones personally.

Mine measure about 19" on the flat part before it starts to neck down towards the weld...if I went weld to weld. it would be about 21".
Where are you measuring the 24" from?
