    jag diff rebuilding info

    everyone....
i figured i would ask...is anybody interested in a very detailed posting of my
    jag diff rebuild ????

    i am starting with a bare housing/new gears/posi and bearings.....i can show
in pretty good detail how to go about the set up with a bunch of neat labor
saving tricks i have figured out over the years. i did some searching and
found a lot of info like "set the backlash to 8-10 thousanthds by changing
side shims" but no real tricks on how to keep your sanity while doing it.....

on a separate note i must say mr butch capps at mid south gear is a great
vendor to deal with. got home from work and on my front step was a box
with all the seals/bearings/shims to do the diff, less outer hubs, all ordered
monday......it is nice to deal with someone who knows what the hell
ya need without using crayons and large letters!!!!!!

here is an idea of simple this really is...these are the tools you need...

    1) torque wrench...100ft lbs will do
    2) calipers (digital or standard)
    3) die grinder with 40 or 60 grit flap wheels.....

    thats it !!!!

a dial indicator is nice, but not absolutely required, they can be had from
harbor freight dirt cheap(25.00) and they work fine. i also got my digital
calipers from them and also the die grinder. total cost was less than 50.00.

    enjoy!!! i have parts !!!!!

I hope im not speaking for everyone, but being 95% complete w/ my car i have used that "search" tab many of times and your detailed re-build would be an asset.

    rick,
yep,i broke 2 more outer hubs(cracked) and the ring gear is missing a tooth
that i can't find. i ordered cwi's billet hubs an auburn pro and a set of dana
3.73 for some more yeehaaa of the line, like i really needed it !!!!

while i am in the diff i am replacing everything, bearings, seals, all new ujoints,
    supension bushings, etc.

the car is 6 yrs old with 25k HARD miles (well, you know) so i figure this is
good maitenance practice. i also got tired of the open carrier after i killed
the powerlock....but it was hard to beat the price, free !!!!

the temps in ohio were not a problem but here in fl the carb vapor locks
all the freakin time. so i am milling 3/4" off the super victor, adding a wood
spacer, covering my fuel line in firesleeve and will eventually build a sealed
box pulling fresh air from the hood scoop and inner fenders. if that doesn't
cure the problem i am going to try a return style fuel system.....last resort
will be to lower the compression, but i reaaaalllly do not want to do that...

are you coming to homecoming this year ????

    Chris,
I built a return style sytem for my car. I had intended to buy fittings for the regular hard line and was planning to dead head the regulator without a return line. However, I was told that I would eventually burn up the pump, and have symptoms like vapor lock. So, you may want to go ahead and run the return line. Russell makes a nice bulkhead fitting for just this application, I will get pictures up this weekend.
What fuel pump are you running?

    justin,
i am running the mallory 110,the one that does not need a regulator.
mallory told me that pump was o.k. to use as a dead head pump. the
reason i think it is a heat soak problem is that to make it go away
all i need to do is toss the air cleaner...not good with all the sand in
the air down here. when i ran the vic jr intake i had a 3/8 plastic spacer
and also never had a problem. the eventual plan is to change the entire
system to efi with a holley look throttle body. problem is i refuse to pay
what people want for systems when i can do 99.99 % of the work myself.
i have been looking at the megasquirt kit, just with all the work right now
on the car it has been put on the back burner....i wanna make homecoming.

i saw you are running a super victor...what is your engine combo ????

    Chris,

Here are some of the engine specs.

    http://www.uniquecobra.com/showthread.php?t=6681

The cam is 248/252 with a tad over 600 lift. I decided to go with a hydraulic motor because of some of the new cams that are out.

Using the air cleaner that Maurice and Alan suggested I can get a 14 X 3 filter to fit under the hood. If you are going to mill your intake down I think half an inch will work, and just come back with a half inch spacer.

Going fuel injected sounds cool, but I would think twice before I purchased a system that wasn't based on a stock computer for a street car. With the new chips that can be burned on stock computers and using Mass Flow extenders you can now support a car that makes 30lbs of boost and over 1100 hp.

I have run in one form or another DFI, FAST, AEM, Holly, and Edelbrock. On our most recent project we ran FAST and AEM on the car. The AEM was difficult at best to even set up because of gremlins in their system. The car now has custom burned chips on a stock computer and has made the same power, but is much easier to drive on the street. I am not saying that the fuel injected set up is bad because you can get close on fuel mapping, but it is not any less trouble free than a carburator. On a boosted motor I would run fuel injected and on a NA motor I would run a carb, unless you liked the look of one of the stack injector setups. After running Delardos on my Uncles's car I would run a stack FI setup before the Webber setup.

Good to hear from you Chris. I figured you had blown it out again! You wild man you. You ought to tell them the Viper story from a few years back. Good one.

For those of you that don't know, Chris has the most powerful normally aspirated small block Cobra that I personally am aware of. What was it Chris? 450+ to the wheels?

Chris also gave me my very first ride in a Cobra. After changing my shorts.... I wanted more!

Not going to make it Home Coming this year. Hope to next though. I was just down in the Bradenton/Sebring area a few weeks ago. Total brain fart I didn't think to look up where you where. Will be in the Orlando area next spring.

DAMN!!! Where is the little smile-con of me kicking myself in the a$$? Chris you are only about 40 miles or so from where I was in March. I had a whole day where I did nothing. Should have looked you up... oh well, live and learn.
