    428 engine build

    Hello everyone,
Thought you might be interested in a engine build that a local builder finished up for me.
He did all the machine work in house and all the installation of parts on the motor. I bascily
observed the process and made decisions on his advice and dicussions on parts from tech
reps from various companys. Ihave know experience in building an engine, but i wanted to
learn how a engine goes together and how it makes it power. Iwas able to stop by his shop
regularly and see what he was working on, dicuss parts and options do some research and
then order the parts that we thought were best. This process took about two years. My
goal was to have a strong motor for the street be dependable, driveable and have more power than i have now. The dyno runs showed we had very good results. Torgue runs were from 2000rpm/480lbs, 4500rpm/540lbs, to 6000rpm/460lbs. Horsepower runs were from
2000rpm/184hp, 4500rpm/461hp. to 6000rpm/530hp. The engine was run in over a two
day period, it had no oil leaks, but a minor water leak at the thermostat housing. Engine wo would idle at 800rpm and sounded great. I'm very pleased wih these numbers in a power range of 2000rpm to 6000rpm. I believe this motor will preform very well on the street and have plenty of power. Now to decide where to use it, in the cobra, or in a 68 mustang fastback? The folling is a list of some of the specs. and parts we used.

    Engine; 428cj FE, bore 4.160, stroke 3.984, cid = 434

canton - windage tray, oil pan,
msd ingition, rev limiter, coil, ford distributor.
    edelbrock water pump

    ram clutch and alum. flywheel

This is most of the specs and parts we used in the build. A lot of you fellas will understand the numbers better than i do, but i'm trying to learn. So their it is,if you have any thoughts or how you would do it differently i be curious to know. I'll try to post a couple pictures.

Glenn - I like your numbers. Torque is right up front and stays through the range.

    Nice

    Good numbers and good parts.
I like the components you chose. Everything is matched.

    Both cars would be cool. Mustang or Cobra (-;

Hey, your car was in the annual mag, right? I'd recognize that photo anywhere.

Great engine choice. I say that because I've been pretty much convinced for a while now to go 428CJ. Having your detail will make excellent reference info.

    Enjoy!

    thanks everyone,

Brian, your right, I've got about 3000 more in this motor than my orginial 406, spreading it out over the build was a little easier to do. Should have most of my costs covered by now.
Geary, Thats what we tried to build too, pretty happy with results. Been following your engine work also, should be pretty impressive.
Brent, Got to give the builder the most credit, dicussed a lot of parts and options, valve train was a big issue with him, just good communication with him.
Tony, I'm curious how the numbers compare with a 427 motor
Will, good to hear from you,That was the first time i was every at any nascar tracks and it was nice to have a photo from their. Your professor stories always make me laugh. Keep it up.
Kelly, I believe i saw some pictures of your car in Kit car builder a couple issues ago doing a
cruise event with a local club. Hope to see you all at homecoming.
aks801,I believe any of the fe motors are a good choice, and better yet, the 427 and 428
make it more authenic to the orginial cars.

    Thumbs up

    Glenn,
That engine in the Cobra is going to make you pee your pants!

Compared to a stock 427 your 428 will blow it away.
A stock 427 is not very tame at lower RPM but will pull like a jet on top end. I always found myself wanting to keep it above 2800RPM.
The stroker is another story. Tons of low end grunt and power is smooth and strong from off idle and on up through the RPM range.

Your engine is perfect for a Cobra.
