If our nation’s Founders could visit us on this, our 232nd Independence Day, what would they make of us? What would they declare of us?
A hint can be discerned in a letter from John Adams to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776, as the Declaration of Independence had just been approved. “It ought to be commemorated,” said the man who would become our second president, “as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Americans have maintained the “Pomp and Parade” for more than two centuries now, and the “Bonfires and Illuminations” are commonplace, but how often do we recognize Independence Day as “the Day of Deliverance?” How often do we honor it with “solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty”? How often do we contemplate the cost of our freedom, “the Toil and Blood and Treasure?” "

My take on this would be : I don't think the founding fathers would be too happy with this Nation of ours, make your own conclusions as to why.
All the Patriotism that was displayed after 9/11 has moved to the back shelf. One indication of this is, if you look around your communities this July 4th see how many Amercian Flags are flying??

I challenge all of you on this forum to get the flags out and fly them proudly on the 4th of July. If you havn't got an American Flag it's about time you bought one. Show some backbone and a stiff spine, it's about time we as a Nation start going the right direction instead of the wrong direction.

Have a great 4th of July and a safe one with your family and friends but remember and think about why we are celebrating this Holiday. I will have my flag flying and if this offends anyone I am sure you can find me if you wish.

I agree with you 100%. Our American Flags were put up the day after the 911 attack and have been flying every day since. Some might have noticed at Homecoming, our Cobra has a US Flag decal in the center of the windsheild. There's alot wrong here, but there's much more right here then anywhere I've visited or even talked about.

Couldn't agree more. Dad's got the flag flying out front of the shop every day here in Lecta.

Now, cruise on over to my house, and you'll see an addition. There's a d**n good, patriotic reason that I'm flying this flag...

See, the first place I saw pictures of this "Auburn Nation" flag were ones that some fellow alumni forwarded of a camp in Iraq. Underneath the Stars & Stripes was this orange & blue banner. Auburn's ROTC program is huge, and many of my former classmates are currently serving.

So, at our place, Old Glory is there to remind us of country.

The Orange & Blue is there to remind me of classmates Marine Dale Butler, submariner Adam Barnes, Naval aviator Bryan Schwartz, and many others. God bless and keep them, wherever this Independence Day may find them.

I have been flying my flag ever since I moved out of my parents house.
The son of two people who were raised in another country. My father a career US military man and a WWII, Korea and Vietnam vet would always say" I have been around the world three time and if there was any place better than the US we would be living there"

My mother who was born and raised in England became a US citizen in 1967
and said she wouldn't go back to live there.

This is a great Country and I don't think our founding fathers would think any less of her now. When only one out of six able bodied men fought in the American Revolution for the freedom of all.

through a little town just south of gadsden ,alabama last thursday called glencoe--had white crosses in the median of fourlane with american flag , big flag, attached to each cross, name of the fallen and the war fought in--very, very moving--stretched down road for a mile ,mayby, crosses of the fallen dead--just from etowah county, have 67 counties in our state.By the time I got to the end of the crosses had tears.Now, I am not as optimistic as I use to be about our country,s future--in my opinion we have a man running for president that is not qualified--and may be outright the enemy that killed 3000 of our neighbors in new york.I find it not likely that a man can hang around a church for 20 years that advocates insurrection and destruction of our nation ,and is not a part of it. If a fellow hung around the klan for 20 years ,reckon we might put him in with that group?2 cents, sorry Rick, for showing my butt, am most disturbed by this candidate and where he came from. Will, glad you put in your 2 cents worth. You are right on with diegokid, no harm in voicing an opinion.

One thing you guys failed to mention:

He had a problem with the American Flag as a lapel pin and voiced his reasons for not wearing one but now it is there and part of his dress, BS!

Also has a problem with with what to do with his hands when the American Flag is raised, do I question his patriotism, damn right I do.

My mother was also an immigrant, coming to the United States in early 1946 as a War Bride from Australia. She was with the RAAF during WW II when she met my dad while he was serving with the US Army Air Corp. She knew more about the history of this country than most US Citizens, so when I had questions about the History of the USA throughout my school years she could always answer my questions. Yes we still have a great country but if she were living today she would certainly not be happy with some of the stuff going on.

I think from December of 1941 through to 1963 were the most unified time of patriotism for Americans.

The Fifties is a Golden age and symbol of what we would always want the U.S to be. I wish it could be like that again.

I don't want a socialist as a president. He will send us back to the failed government policies of the 70's. That is the change he wants. Read his book. This comes from his own words.
