I know there is supposed to be some play in the back hubs but how much is ok? with the car jacked up if i grab the wheels there is about 1/4 in play. is this ok? or do i need an adjustment?

I'm assuming you are referring to inches. The rear will have some play.

There are 21 different copper colored spacer washers for the rear axle where it goes into the hub carrier assy. Each one is in .004 increments. And yes you have to have some play, maybe Alan can advise what they use, I would think .250 is excessive but not earth shattering. I would think around 1/16 - 1/8" is about right. You have to pull the axle to change the shimming washers. I will ask Butch Capps at Mid-South Gear and see what he thinks it should be.

According to Butch Capps, this amount at the tire is within limits, no worry.
