    Ford Bolt Torque Values

    Ford Bolt Torque Values

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't know why there are specs for the exhaust manifolds/headers on the big blocks, but not on the other blocks. Here's some numbers and a calculator:

What are the 351W torque specs for the 2 bolts connecting the thermostat housing to the manifold? I'm not sure what the proper name of those bolts would be so I don't know that they are listed on the above chart. Incidently, as for small block header bolts, I have an original Ford High Performance Supplemental owners manual. The exhaust manifold torque limits are as follows:
    289 HiPo 13-18 lbs
    427 and 428 12-18 lbs

    Header Torque Values

On most engines it is pretty much impossible to torque every header bolt....better get used to the "feel factor" when installing the header bolts.

As my uncle Jerry used to say "Tighten it 'til it gets loose again and back off half a turn".

    Bolt Torque Markings

    Walter

You need to look at the bolt-head and use the attached table to determine the torque required. The bolt for the thermostat housing is usually the lowest grade 3/8 inch bolt (no bolt-head markings = number 1 or 2 grade bolt), so you will want to use a torque of 18 or 20 ft/lbs depending on the number of thread per inch (16 or 24 threads per inch).

Be careful that someone not knowledgable in bolt torque values didn't change the bolt to a stronger bolt. If they changed your thermostat bolts to a stronger bolt, you may strip the threads in the aluminum intake manifold before you reach the maximum torque value of the bolt. Not a good thing to do.
