Look at the Edelbrock Victor water pumps.

thats what i have, good call
Thanks for the link Pat. Only question is if car heats up more when idling at red lights, would the "High Performance" pump which is designed for street rods be better than the "Victor Pro" circle track? Is the Victor Pro designed for high rpms flowing more than idle rpm flowing? I hate back plates. Just more bolts and gaskets to leak.

You don't need the racing pump on a street car. If you have have heat issues at idle, I'd look at your cooling fan. You need to move more air through the radiator. A good shroud plus a high CFM electric puller fan will help.

If you get to the fan stage a number of guys are using various versions of SPAL fans - http://www.jaycorptech.com/c-3-cooling-products.aspx

Cooling isn't my big worry. I've got the 2 push fans and installed a Spal puller on the inside. I talked to Susan at Southern Automotive and she said the only water pump they carrry for a 396Windsor stroker is the Edelbrock 8843 which is a Victor series. Hello Summit. But it's always good to be able to post something.
