are the aluminum panel functional or cosmetic? other than some insulation, do they serve any function?

They just look cool from what I know. A bit of a maintenance issue but they finish off the engine bay.

We do recommend aluminum heat shields insalled on the sides of the footboxes, they deflect heat and protect the fiberglass closest to the headers. You can't have too much heat protection.
