View Full Version : radiator hose splices

i'd had to splice three hoses together to get from the water pump to the bottom of the radiator. these are 1 3/4 diameter hoses, and i'm using two short pieces of steel tubing (which are originally designed for exhaust systems) to act as internal couplings. these steel tubings do not have a "upset" neck that allows the hose clamp to clamp on a smaller diameter portion of the coupling and prevent the hose clamp from slipping over the raised "upset" part of the ring.

is this going to work? or is there such a thing as a hose splice "thing"?

hope you can understand my question.

thanks

Doug,
Take the pipes to a welding shop and have them run a weld bead around the pipe about 1/4- 1/2" from each end. That is what they do at Unique.

I managed the same routing with only two pieces of hose and one piece of muffler pipe (may depend on your engine choice). The pipe must be bent 90-degrees (but not in the center) and the long end passes through the hole in the front frame member. Here's some pics...

I used muffler pipe as well and did as poorboy suggested had a bead run around the pipe. Chill used the same pipes and didn't have the bead done - his hoses blew off within twenty minutes.

that is clever, you saved one potential leak. good

my trail fit is illustrated. will get weld bead and then sew it up. the little green thing between the cross member frame and the hose clamp is to prevent the clamp from rubbing on frame. a piece of plastic, but will also put a piece of rubber gasket material there also.

The 2" hose from the water pump down to the steel pipe is an awkward fit, works the best if you have the spring in the radiator hose to keep it from collapseing. These are hard to find as I bought an old radiator hose from a parts house just to get the spring out of it. If you put the spring in the hose you can make it meet the 2" steel pipe a little better( I used stainless exhaust pipe and had it ceramic coated like the headers). This was for a FE Big Block.

Was it just me, or was it a real BI*CH to slip the rubber hose onto the water pump? I swear it felt like I was trying to fit a 2.5" nozzle into a 2" hose. Said a lot of bad words that day.

I won't say anything about my lack of welding beads for fear of jinxing my apparent good luck. [:O]

i didn't have that problem with the water pump, but have had my share of occasions to use colorful language, and more coming i think
