We have just completed the installation of a 4.6 DOHC out of a cobra mustang and would like to let everyone know that was the first and the last we will do. The engine in the middle is as wide as a 427 but much wider at the front, it had to have a special steering rack, we bought it from Flamming River but they left the tags that said made in Argentina, and an extra steering shaft. The headers took Maurice two days to fabricate and he had another two days set up time to locate the engine in the chassis. We have done things over the years that we said we wouldn't do it again but this time the Mo man means it.

Have a old engine in the Garage that I was thinking of using in a 427 S/C. It's a 66 426 Dodge Hemi and somebody put the 2-4's Ram Induction Intake on it. See what you and Maurice can come up with to get it to fit. Dont want to change the intake! Want to keep the price down, no more than a 200.00 up charge from the Deluxe Pallet Kit.

Alan,

Dispite the installation difficulties, it sure sounds as though someone ended up with a sweet motor in their car. Was there room for a Paxton supercharger? I think the blown 4.6s can comfortably put out 500 HP. Do you know if there was a considerable weight savings over an FE?

As an engineer, I can greatly appreciate what a royal pain in the a$$ it must have been. Did you take any pics or were you still seeing too much red to be snapping pictures?

Silk,

Dont understand, why you want a blown 4.6 that puts out 500 HP. A FE, 403 Cu in. through 427 cu in. will easily do that with a single 4 barrel, natural aspirated. If thats all it will do blown I would be disappointed, $$ vs horsepower isn't there. My thoughts. Plus the resale would suck.

Eliminator,

I agree with you. I wouldn't have any interest in stuffing a 4.6 into my car (and with an FIA, no interest in an FE either:D). It just seemed like an interesting project. My understanding is that 500 HP out of a blown 4.6 would be way on the conservative side. I think guys can get 600 HP out of those things with fairly moderate boost and generally good reliability. If the 4.6 gives you substantial weight savings (and I'm not sure it does), and someone wanted a good open track or auto-x Cobra, it might make some sense. Resale? The pits, obviously! :(

I am also guessing that a Blown 4.6 sounds like $hit through sidepipes.[xx(] It might be OK at wide open throttle ,but, I do not want to sit at a stoplight next to Vette and sound the same. I want him to roll up his deeply tinted windows and turn on his Bose radio to hopefully drown out the sound of the beast sitting next to him.:( Inside his head are two fears, "I hope he doesn't want to race" "I hope my girlfriend doesn't notice"[8D]

Hi Guys.
I find it interesting reading about 'bigger and better' power plants.
And while I somewhat subscribe to the old saying 'there is no replacement for diplacement.'I have had to take a somewhat different look at things in light of my recent trip back home to the UK and review of the Kit Car Market in Europe in general.
It's maybe somewhat true that engine size in their Cobra's is driven by petrol( gasoline) prices....double the cost of ours in the US and Canada....But I also see a trend in Europe that engines in general are getting more and more powerful without additional displacement.
The biggest 'lump' you will see advertised for standard use in Cobra's like Sumo's, Pilgrim's, Hawk's is the Rover/Buick 3.8 Litre

Think about it...How much power do you really need to effectively push 2100 lb. of fibreglass and metal....( thats 2100 lb with a 302 CI cast iron block)

I suppose the other thing is...no matter how much HP you got in your Cobra...if you don't get it to the road effectively....and that can be hard in a light cars like our Uniques....then there are a lot of Rice Rockets out there that could cause some red faces.

Have a good one Guys...( I'm off to look for a V6....Ha..Ha...Ha.)

Mike ,

I agree, a alternative powerplant is probably a sensible alternative to the leaking,loud,non-efficient,american muscle V-8. But let's face it, if we were sensible we would not do what we do.

Somebody on the other forum stated "FEs don't leak, they just mark their territory"
