This subject started again under another thread, and casaleenie (Al), brought up the same thing I'm concerned with - mounting the solenoid under the passenger foodbox on the frame (the elements - rain, dirt, etc, plus ease of access, or the lack thereof). Alan told me he knows of someone who mounted it behind the dash on the passenger side. Picures are always helpful/useful.

On the frame to me works best. It will not get enough water, dirt to cause any trouble. And out of sight looks better. Shorted cable from battery, to starter.
Under the dash if you were to have a short in the cable it is not fuse protected, so you could be in deep dodo before you knew it. Longer cables.
On the firewall you will have to ground it. You will need a longer battery cable and starter cable.

Poorboy,
I agree with everything you said. The solenoid mounted to the frame below the front 289 roll bar mount just makes sense.

i have mine bolted on the rear of the passenger side cylinder head on my 428. its easy to get at and the wires for it only come out of the main harness about three inches. got the idea seeing it in a bunch of marine applications. later brian

We are using a mini-pmgr starter from PA perfomance that has the solenoid built in.

There's some pretty good pictures of a frame installation at:

I've also seen a firewall installation that I liked pretty well and here's a picture of that one:

I guess what it all comes down to is personal preference... :)
