Help!!!

Any pics of the aluminum in front of the radiator and around the oil cooler would be great[8D]

I plan to start on it this weekend and need some input.

Anything you would do different or change would help.[?]

Thanks alot!!!

Phil,

You're welcome. I just joined this forum today, so am just getting up to speed. I'm from the Washington DC metro area, and we have a very active club (Capital Area Cobra Club). I bought my car last August, which was factory built by Unique in 97.

Once I figure it out, I'll get pictures up. I saw your build pictures tonight....love your choice of color and engine treatment. Aren't those turkey pans pretty!!?

Brent - here are my notes and refernce pic I made (for what it's worth - I'm going to be doing this over the weekend and hope I don't wind up behind the [8])

http://www.uniquecobra.com/uploaded/pgermond/Remote oil cooler aluminum.JPG

Oil Cooler Aluminum
1. Install radiator first
2. Mount oil cooler in box
3. Mount box in opening insuring cooler is level using two bolts – will have to use shims
4. #5 and #6 - one rivet in 5 and 6 to hold in place (cleco’s wont work – may have to drill out if necessary to move)
5. #3 and #4 - make a template using poster board for 3 and 4. Fit template before bending aluminum to fit and using cleco’s
6. #3 and #4 - Drill holes for lines
7. #3 and #4 – overlap needs to be centered using stripe as reference
8. #1 goes up in front of radiator (if desired)

One thing you guys need to look at doing, run your fan wires inside the brace that holds your fans. You just need a hot wire to the fans (watch for the right wire as fans will run both clockwise and counterclockwise), the ground can go to the fan bracket. Would load a picture but there at home on the PC there. You can drill a couple of holes in the brace for the wires. Brent, this info is on the disc I gave you.

It looks like Part #'s 5 & 6 (Phils pics)are missing on Clayfoushee's Pics. They go on the left & right side of the radiator to seal off air from being diverted around and not through the radiator.

Interesting Okie, hadn't noticed that. I didn't build my car and just acquired it in August, but when doing research prior to buying it, the Weavers told me they did factory build the car in 97.

I wonder if parts #5 & 6 are product enhancements that came along later? I'll have to ask the Weavers.

But, for whatever it's worth, you actually don't notice that opening when looking normally at the car, and when moving, the side-oiler is registering a cool 150 deg. on the gauge.

P.S. Okie,

Just looked at your installation which looks nice. It does look like a different aluminum design than on your car. For example, the bottom piece goes all the way back to the radiator as do the sides.

Pgermond, is that a Unique aluminum kit or self made?

Clay, it looks like your bottom piece is just one piece without a seam in the middle?

Okiesnake, how do the side pieces next to the radiator mount?

Thanks everyone these pics are great!

Pgermond's aluminum is the Unique kit or someone has made an exact copy of their kit. The kit has changed over the years somewhat but this is the kit that is sold now. The lower aluminum pieces butt in the middle, or off center depending on how you do it. Pieces 5 and 6 can be held in place with 1 or 2 pop rivets, actually 3 and 4 go over these pieces and are pop riveted to them. Will try to post some shots of this tonight.

Yes, the aluminum on the bottom is one piece and each side is one piece (total of 3). As I said, mine was a turn-key car built by the Weavers in 97, so my guess is they've made changes in the aluminum over the years.

I do like the oil cooler hoses coming through the holes in the side aluminum with a rubber insulator around them. The gaps at the top on each side of the radiator aren't visible unless you're about 18" tall or spend a lot of time lying down in your garage. Moreover, the airflow around the radiator makes no difference, since there's still the same amount of air hitting the radiator...might even help cooling in the resting of the engine bay.

I know it is a little excessive-compulsive, but I ran the fan wires through small gauge wire loom. I split the wires out so that the wires to the right fan enter from the right side of the car and the wires to the left fans enter from the left side of the car.
Brent, as you may have figured out, after pieces 5 & 6 and the oil cooler shroud are installed, pieces 3 & 4 are bent into place on the sides of the opening and pop riveted into place.
Clayfoushee, I too like the oil cooler hoses coming through the holes in the side aluminum with rubber grommets around them. I ran the oil cooler lines and the wire looms through rubber grommets.

Okie,

I thought that was a great idea, hiding the wires the way you did. I just wish the Weavers had thought of that before they built my car.....obviously not O-C enough. My guess is Mr. Shelby probably didn't think of that either.

I'm glad I found this forum. I'm learning a lot from many people like you.

I am using #3003 aluminum .030 thick.

I have sent my fan mount to ChromeMasters in Nashville, TN. I will be running the wires through the inside of the mounting tube, it was actually pretty easy to do.

Hey Brent,

Played hooky again today [8D] Got the radiator and cooler mounted, cut out some templates for the aluminum, but had to stop due the fact that I need to get a 1" punch for the aluminum around the cooler.

Do you plan on going up and over with your lines, or horizontal?

Now another tip for you guy's. Take the two bolts loose that run through the motor and rotate the portion of your motor that has the wires exiting the motor to get the wires the correct position so the wiring harness will come out the top of the fan motor assembly. The drivers fan motor can be set at 1 o'clock and the passenger fan motor at 11 o'clock or however you want them. Just makes the whole fan mount a little cleaner.[8D][8D]

Phil,
In your pics, it looks like you have some kind of a wire mesh grill cover over your radiator. If you do, please share the details. I have seen SPF's with a mesh grill covers (of course they just use 1 puller fan behind the grill). It would be a great idea to protect the grill from suicidal bugs.

Joe you can use cardboard. You bend it and cut it until you have what you want. If you cut it wrong tape pieces on. After you get the shape you want lay it flat on the aluminum, mark it and cut it. Mark the ends of each fold. Then you can bend it to replicate the cardboard. If you don't have a brake you can use wood (hardwood like oak) that has eased edges.

I can do that:)

I was thinking there was some secret math formula or measuring technique.

[u]Okiesnake</u> - No, there is no mesh... just the way the pic turned out.

[u]Joe</u> - If you have a break, etc for bending, that's great. I don't, so I resorted to what I use best - my hands [:P] one on one side and one on the other (palms flat) and just slowing began to bend the aluminum working up and down the panel. Also, I found card board a bit to cumbersome, so I used light poster board paper (that what those red templates are made of on page 2).

Good luck [8D]
