View Full Version : Cleaning Pipes

Copper01

I had the Cobra out the other day and, predictably, attracted a gaggle of the neighborhood boys. They all started to cluster around the car and I warned them several times about the pipes being hot, but unfortunately one of them got a little close. He wasn't burned, but his baggy nylon pants got an impressive hole and now my left header has melted nylon all over it. :(

Any thoughts on how to remove the melted nylon residue without also removing the ceramic coating or otherwise damaging the pipe?

My trick is to get the pipes hot again, then wipe as much of the residue
off as possible followed up with some WD-40.

The best thing I've found for sidepipes in that metal polish wadding (can't remember the name). It comes in a tin can with a pop off top. It looks sort of like thick cotton, but it has sufficient abrasive properties to remove anything stuck to the pipes. Pep Boys sell it.

427 Windsor Stroker from Southern Automotive

Although metal wadding polish available from Eagle and others is a decent product, the best stuff I've ever seen is called "Southern Shine Metal Polish." It was given to me by the local company that re-coated my ceramic sidepipes. They said it wasn't sold in stores, but is available from:

Brown Labs, Inc.
Ormand Beach, FL
(386) 677-0460
(866) 677-0460

This stuff makes aluminum look almost like chrome, and is good for virtually all other metals as well.....truly amazing stuff. I wouldn't use it on black pipes, but it makes the silver ones look new.

The polish mentioned above by my brother is amazing stuff. Believe me, I've tried them all and this stuff is incredible compared to ANY other product. Phil, you'll think Mother's metal polish is like polishing with water after using this stuff. I've seen it marketed as simply "Metal Polish", by Brown Labs. Definately not sold in stores but worth the effort to find. Do as WBorTN above suggests, get the pipe as hot as it was when the nylon melted to it, wipe it off with an old tee shirt and use the polish. I've had this happen a million times on my Harley. Rain suit pants are made of the same stuff and always come in contact with side pipes on motorcycles. If there is a custom motorcycle shop in your area, you might call them to inquire about it.

I just called Brown Labs about the Southern Shine Polish mentioned above, since I'm about to run out. They don't generally sell retail, but said they have distributors in FL up through the Carolinas, and a few out west. Their product is now patented.

They are willing to sell by the case, 36 bottles for $180, plus $20 for shipping. I won't live long enough to use all of that, but if there is any interest, I'd being will to keep a list and sell it for my cost ($5 a bottle, plus whatever the shipping would be.) I'm sure I can sell the majority of it to our Capital Area Cobra Club members.

OK, based upon the interest, I'll order a case. Anyone else, post your order on this thread, and I'll either bring it to Gadsden or send it to you.

I can probably sell the bulk of it to our CACC guys, but Unique owners should have special status!

Phil,

I'm glad I'm not crazy, because that's what I thought. I had Mother's and all the other stuff, and this stuff just amazed me too. When I ordered the case, I talked to the owner of the company, and he wouldn't tell me anything other than he had just received his U.S. Patent. My guess is he'll go more public with this stuff at some point.

Any of this stuff still available, I am using this stuff called Wizards, I think it was formally called Quatters, I think it was a Swedish product. Very very good, but always open to trying something new,
When I bought my car it had residue of a melted bag on both side pipes.I have gotten 80% off using 000 steel wool and WD-40, presentable enough, but far from perfect

Clay,

Doing great..... mines been on the road almost five years now and still getting out regularly. Took a 250 mile cruise on Saturday with friends - a '67 Camero and two motorcycle up to Alpine County to take in the fall colors...... and a little rain. The car is running great and gets the "thumbs up" from kids to grandma. I would post a photo, but the file is too large.

Happy to hear you are doing well.
