i have my insurance with American Collectors. was reasonable in price, about $350 per year for $45,000 declared value. then the state of Louisiana tells me to get them to restate the description of the car, from Cobra Replica to Assembled 2004, and American Collector raises the rate to $805 per year.

I've called around, and haven't found anyone else that will insure cobra replica. One agent said so many insurers have been "burned" with high accident rate, that i'm lucky to have coverage. That i should be careful not to let any coverage lapse, because the industry is almost ready to deny coverage to our cars?

Comments?

I use state farm: $84 per year $25,000 declared value, registerd as a 1967 with a antique tag.
I had to sign a 1000 mile per year max statement.

Doug,

Good luck. American Collectors was the only insurance company I could find that would even write a policy in La.

State Farm, $45,000 value, 250 deductible, 100k/300k Uninsured/Bodily injury, $410/yr, 2,000 mi/yr (my agent is a sports car nut, which probably helps) [^]

I have had State Farm since I was 18 and in the Military, no one else back then would cover me. They don't want to touch my Cobra in KY, $780.00 a year. So it's definetly a State by State deal.

Do you guys really stay within the mileage limits imposed by your insurers? If I could't put 6K a year on my car I'd pop like an over-stuffed tick on a fat dog's belly! My insurance does run $750/yr on $45K value, but my car's listed on my regular Allstate auto policy. Annual limit is 7,500 miles / yr.

Tony,

My guy tells me the mileage is a "guideline". When it gets close to 2,000 I hope my speedo cable doesn't snap ;)

Mines with StateFarm for a stated value of somewhere in the mid 30's. $680 per year, I don't think there is a milage limit.

The mileage limit's are a deal breaker, if you have a claim and are over the mileage limit for that year they can deny the claim. They ask for the mileage every year.

it's pretty easy to disconnect the speedo cable. one of my employees used to run his back with a reversing drill motor, don't know if that would work on this odometer, but he did it on some of his old cars.

I'm amazed how much difference in insurance policys. Mine is with Great American Ins. through Parish-Heacock. Cost $800.00 per year, 3,000 miles limit, $45,000. value. Have to be over 27 yrs old and have at least 2 years seat time in this type of car. They said most people don't know how to handle a car with so much power. If I had a 427, it would cost more.

Doug,

I'd be happy to discuss this with you in person. Based on your first comment, you might want to shop your policy.

Maybe the Insurance in Canada is relative to the ammount of time
we get to drive our cars.
I'm paying $355 a year....on a declared value of $30K.
ANY driver needs to have held a licence for 10 years.
( So that now includes my two sons....yehaa.)
$100 deductable.
$500,000 liability.
As Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world, we get 6000 miles
per year road time.
Cannot be used as a daily driver for commuting to and from work.

Nice one Phil.
But as I communicate thru this site ( which by the way ONLY has 3
non USA members)...I try to make it easy for yaaalllll by stating
my numbers in USD...not the real coin of the realm.
( PS...we also have a 2 dollar coin in Canada now ) :D

I wasn't joking about the 6000 mile thing.....A round trip for me
to go visit my daughter in Calgary, would rack up in the order of
4800 miles

And finally....Yeeehaa....I get my Cobra out of COLD storage on May 3rd.
Feel kinda strange saying Yeeehaa ( as a displaced Brit.)..but what
the hell...I live in a country loaded with cowboys.

I know that it's not a Cobra, but I have my '66 Mustang GT insured through State Farm as a 'second' vehicle on the same policy as my primary driver. The car is valued at $20K and since it is written on the same policy as my primary and has similar value, it is only listed as an 'additional' car.

The fee for adding the Mustang was about $200 per year, but the policy for the primary driver dropped by $100 with a 'multiple vehicle discount'. Net increase is about $100 per year with the same liability as my primary. I have no mileage restriction either.

Bottom line, check into adding your car as a 'second' to see if a multiple vehicle discount will apply to lower your overall rate...

Sounds like rates here vary by company, office, state, and wind direction. Good luck!
