View Full Version : This could be very bad!

I found that my left rear bearing is slack. After consulting the Jag rear end manual, it is a major job to reshim these bearings, not to mention you need several "official" tools.

I hope this doesn't keep me from driving to homecoming!![V][V]

Any recommendations? Like a Jag service guy in Augusta?

John better to find it now at home than have it fail half way to Gadsden. I'm sure someone in Augusta can fix it quick.

Steve,

Good thing you have a trailer. I may be calling a buddy who offered me a open trailer. We'll see what happens this week.

Stop doing burnouts, and your clutch will last longer.:)

I guess if you tow it, we will both get there at the same time. As for stopping burnouts...clutches were made to be replaced.

Believe it or not, I found someone to work on the wheel bearing, and they are a Jag shop. They even said that they could have it back to me by Thursday morning. Hopefully I'll be heading west on I-20 Thursday.

John, I guess going to homecoming was meant to be. I'm going to ATC this afternoon to find out if my clutch needs replacing. The plate got pretty hot as I was loading the car on the trailer to go to the body shop last week. I can't help but think there is a relationship between the two.

Man, we're ALL in the shop this week. (Talk about JIT engineering!) I called Tuffy at Tuffy's Towing and Garage and discussed my issues, so he stopped by the house this morning to get the car and "take care of the problem". I gave him the code to the garage and told him where the keys were hidden (obviously, I trust Tuffy quite a bit). He's planning to replace the throwout bearing and possibly the clutch with a much beefier unit (used by a lot of the local hot-rodders and racers). Tuffy said it would be done by tomorrow. If I know Tuffy, he'll probably have it done by tonight.

Let's keep our collective fingers crossed!!!!

If anything I guess Homecoming forces us to get things done we have been putting off. Sure am glad Mr. Capps dictated to me the law when I built my car, HYD. THROWOUT BEARING. They just work great in the FE cars.
John, glad to hear you found a problem early and are getting the repair done now. Good preflight check list I guess.

Excel, Looks like you and I both will have zero time clutches leaving out of here. My condition was posted on the "clutch adjustment" thread, but I discovered clutch, pressure plate and cracked fly wheel this afternoon. And I had NO HINT of a problem with this area before yesterday. The fly wheel was cracked bad enough that the shop fixing it said they thought it would have come apart the next time I got on it good.

Holy s*$% Steve...... What's the explanation for the cracked flywheel? That's just too bizarre! I hope you're in a good shop.

It's also very fortunate that you didn't have a chance to test the Lakewood shatterproof bell-housing. Ever noticed where your legs are in relation to the flywheel.

Hey brother man, yeah, I had the same thought! Apparently, the clutch slave cylinder wasn't adjusted properly and the condition created by that was as if someone was riding the clutch constantly. It didn't show signs of slipping until it wore out completely. Unfortunately, the fly wheel overheated from the clutch being out of adjustment and the cracks are associated with the clutch overheating from the problem. S.A. was very compasionate and had the parts ready to go so that I could make it to homecoming. With a little luck, I'll be fixed by tomorrow night. If I'm not fixed by homecoming, I'll tow a Harley Davidson down to homecoming for the cruise.

Hope you get it fixed, buddy. Hopefully my problems won't involve a busted flywheel. That would be bad. Very bad. Then again, I could ue it as an excuse to an aluminum flywheel.
