What the F#@*?

Sunday afternoon, my home computer just started totally flipping out. Internet browser windows opening every ten minutes for no reason, mouse pointer becoming invisible except along the bottom edge of the screen (SOOOOO annoying), windows closing immediately after being opened... and to beat it all, a virus corrupted one of my McAfee files so the v-scan won't run. (sigh)

I (somehow) struggled enough to get to McAfee's website and find their tech help section... hmm... two choices: pay by the minute (no, I don't think so) or pay a one-time fee of $39 that covers me until the incident is resolved, regardless of the number of calls required. No problem. Hell, I'll pay twice that to get this POS working right again.

So I've talked with McAfee no fewer than 6 times since Sunday afternoon and I must admit, they've been great. Removed two infected files using something called a "Stinger" download. The other two required another download, a "safe mode" restart, and a DOS screen to run a DOS scan. Ah-ha! Deleted the other four infected files! Success? Well, not exactly...

My mouse pointer is invisible thanks to the lastest virus, so I'm having to navigate from tag to tag on websites using the Tab key. Have you ever tried doing that? Not fun.

As long as the mouse is on the bottom toolbar, it's visible. Also visible on the desktop, but not in an application's window. (sigh)

I'm ready to start pricing new Dell's.

I need a vacation.

Kieth,

Your problem is that you should be using the Norton Antivirus programs. Everyone knows that these companies create the viruses to keep themselves in business:D. Norton has more money and therefore probably created the virus you have and McAfee can't get the code from them.[:P][:P]

I guess my experience with Norton has been very good. It's caught everything out so far, and it now seems the updates are coming almost daily. I don't have to do anything, it just automatically updates itself everytime a new one is released.

I have a Dell and home and work, both loaded with Nortons Stuff, no problems. My I S Manger is a fan of Nortons so I go with her reccomendations.

It is unanimous. Norton is the ticket, the key is to get the updates everyday. Your protection is only as good as the last update and a new virus is invented every hour. The bad news is, computers are like Cobras...made to fix. Hey, I just got a great idea, I wonder if I can load Norton on my car.
