View Full Version : Homecoming Next Year

Nneits
September 12th, 2004, 08:07 PM
:D It seems to me - since Unique got its start in Mesa, Arizona, that next years Homecoming should really be in sunny [8D] Arizona, either in Mesa or Scottsdale. Now THAT would be homecoming. Not to mention I can drive there in about ten miniutes. :D

I realize that this sounds like a stupid idea, especially after looking at the pictures from Pigeon Forge (How the hell do you forge a pigeon, anyway?). But picture this: Late February 2005. Your Cobra has been asleep for four months. You haven't seen the sun in so long you're beginning to doubt that it still exists. If you have to watch another re-run of "Joey" you're going to kill the cat. Your bones start hurting even before you get out out of bed in the morning. Your wife wants a warm weather vacation - any warm weather vacation. Some comedian from Arizona calls and tells you about having to shovel 10 inches of sunshine off the driveway.

Don't try to pretend that you like winter - I grew up in Michigan. February... Sunshine... Scottsdale... Driving the Cobra...[:o)]<img src=images/icon_speech_yes.gif border=0 width=23 height=15 alt=Insert Speech Icon: Yes!>

Ron was suggesting February to get the full effect on the folks who have winters....aloha shirts and baggies with sun block. Man did you see those pictures from Pidgeon Forge. What a beautiful location. Maybe we could counter that with a cruise up the Coast Highway from Cambria to Carmel. Hell, the sky is the limit.

ps if anyone is really interested, I would be more than happy to shotgun setting something up

Good idea, heck I might even come out then. But how can you have a homecoming when there's no home to come to since the family moved?:D

Nneits, Pigeon River and a forge hence Pigeon Forge. As for the winters we in TN drive year round. If it snows the snow lasts a day or two and the sun comes out and dries it all up and back on the road! I would really like to do a cruise up the Coast Highway. Did a little cruise sans Lil'Cobra in Washington state, Olympia, just awesome! We had a great time at Shades of the Past 3 days were way too short!

I could see one of three venues:
- cruise up the Coast Highway- Paso Robles/Cambria/Carmel/highway 101 back to Paso Robles
- the wine country (Napa Sonoma area)
- the Gold Rush country (Auburn or Grass Valley to Jamestown via highway 49)
There are probably others I haven't thought of but we're a pretty small contingent out here. Late April to early May or early October would be ideal windows to do it.

Phil G, we could do a dry run if there's interest. I don't even know how many Unique owners are out here.

Need to have an idea how many would really consider participating.

Wow! I was really just joking about calling it the Homecoming, but the notion of a west coast get together does seem kind of cool. We could try to locate the Unique population centers out here and plan the get together accordingly to get the best turnout.

I've only had my car for about a week (it's WBofTN's old car), and I'm still sorting out some tuning issues, but I'm sure looking forward to some driving. I also want to log enough in-town miles to gain confidence enough for longer trips. (I'm not really the car show type.) All the drives suggested so far sound great to me. In the winter, there are some potential desert drives, like Vegas and Palm Springs.

I was really serious but it doesn't look like there is enough interest to go ahead. No reason why we couldn't approach things on a smaller scale ( 2-4 cars) however.

Phil S, having lived out there for 10 years, I know that drive well, it is drop-dead spectacular, and I would almost give something important to do it again in my Unique. The first time I drove it was in a heavily-loaded (with a U-Haul roof rack) Pinto in 1979. Amanda's Mom and I are lucky to still be alive.

I might show up for an event, but can't imagine being able to spend 8 days on the road in my truck and trailer getting the car there and back. Maybe some day..................

I think it would be cool to have a HUGE Unique event sometime. Alan thought they had built about 1500 cars over the years and if we could just get about 100 or more to show up it would be BIG. We would need a central midwest location to draw from everywhere. Maybe at Gateway Racetrack or something like that. Unique can not handle 100 or more cars and the location is too far for some.

Clay/Brent- Distance is always the problem. I've got a nice trailer now so I might try to make it out to the next reunion in Gadsden...but like you say it's still 6/7 days on the road. Phil G and I had a great time at the American Graffiti weekend in Modesto this Summer. Maybe we'll get together and do a dual road trip here just for the story.

My apologies for the delay in responding - no subscription notification available on the calendar forum.

Phil S - I do plan on attending next year's homecoming, but most likely w/o the car (no enclosed trailer + having a job makes it difficult). We really should get together again for something. I know of one other Unique in the area - it was the one built on the TV show (forgot the name of the program). Alan could probably help us locate others.

Cambria would be a blast, but again, without an enclosed trailer the early spring would make that difficult. The wine country or Gold Country are both doable, but a long haul for you. But not Super Bowl weekend in February - I'm going to Cabo for some sailfishing excitment [:P]

Phil,

Will do! If you get up to this area the Gold Country and Foothill wineries are actually better than the Napa area, in my opinion - Napa is crawling with tourist and tour buses, which only add to the mayhem. The foothills on the other hand have some beautiful country roads and virtually traffic free during the week (except for a tractor every now-n-then).

Here are some examples -

Alright Geary!! Love it. Reminds me of my ride home on my RZ350 from Somerset to Sewickley PA in a snow storm. Crashed in my driveway, not serious though.

I bet you had no overheating problem and I'm sure the carb did not freeze up either. How did it go in the snow?

Ralph,
I don't trailer the car. In January of 2003 my Unique was one of the 7 featured vehicles in the Greater Harrisburg Area Car Show. This is a major show in the area which is held at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. I got the "pleasure" of driving in several inches of snow for several miles. Believe it or not the car makes a fairly good "Arctic Cat" with 11" wide rear tires and Jag posi center section. We were featured with several of Bruce Larson's cars including his 60's USA1 Camaro, "Eleanor", Tony Stewart and his 2002 Nascar Ride, several local racing celeberties, Factory prototypes, manufacturers new cars, and Corvette Concours.
The day before the show we pulled in at about 8:00AM and spent most of the day cleaning off road salt.
When driving in snow I find that you don't make any quick movements. Very easy touch on gas, steering, and brakes keeps you from swapping ends.
-Geary
PS If you want to have a really cool(cold and wet) experience try driving from New Castle Pa to Harrisburg...for 4.5 hours on the turnpike...in April...in the Cobra...without a top...in a moderate steady rainfall...42 degrees. I do not trust the weather channel since that day. They Lie! They Lie!

ralphscott
November 14th, 2004, 07:16 AM
Geary I've done the drive but not in a Cobra with the top down. Down here in TN we drive the cars in just about any temperature we just strive to avoid rain as the apres' drive clean-up is a real pain. Sounds like your drive was the kind of drive where at the end after being on the edge of your seat for 4 hours that your adrenaline supplies are about gone!

Hope you make it to the Homecoming next May.

Alright Geary you recognize the machine! Best bike I ever owned light less than 300 pounds and we made some mods and were getting 47 HP out of it. We would take two trips a year a group of us all, with sport bikes, to see the leaves obstensibly in the NE and a spring ride to the SE. I am amazed I am here, The crazy things we did. :D

I am sorry, but if your gonna drive in the rain and snow[V] get another vehicle. These are fair weather cars. Mine is not going out in the snow for sure. The rain may catch me but it will be short as there are always car covers and enclosed trailers;). I have a SUV and a 4 wheeler if I want to play those games:).
