View Full Version : HOOD RIVETS, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Brent

The more I look at cars with the rivets on the hood the more I like them.

How many people have them and do you have any regrets?

pics are always good :D

thanks

Brent, I love the look, I just don't have the guts to do it! If I were to try it you'd see a lot of these [B)][B)][B)][B)][B)]

Brent...do it...you will really love the final look.
I did mine 5 years back....got the dimensions from
the Cobra Restorers catalogue.
31 Rivets around the leading edge of the hood.
I just drilled the holes slightly smaller than the rivet
body and push fitted them in...they have never moved.
If I had to do any re-paint I could remove them very
easily.
This year I intend to hack out the air scope and rivet
a flanged one in it's place.
Gotta play with these things a little bit...then it feels like
a new car.
That reminds me...I better go get mine out of winter storage
sometime before May. ( If the snow would stop.)

Brent,
I love the rivet look, it's another detail that sets the Cobra apart from other cars. I mean seriously, what other vehicle do you know of that is more appealing with exposed fasteners? I'm pretty sure that any Ferrari owner would freak out if you suggested that the car would look better by drilling a hole in the body and running a screw into it. For a Cobra though...It is perfectly natural.

Go for it! It will be something to show off at Homecoming. Don't forget to polish the heads.

I recognize that car. hehehehehe (inside joke for CC)

It is a beautiful car. Well built and as accurate as any csx car can be.

Brian, you are right, the rivets are "proper" for a Cobra and mine will have them before monday morning.

Mike, thanks for the input, I had my mind made up and I just needed a slight push. Thanks!

I think it is one more thing that gives the Cobra a more aggressive look. I like them both ways. But lean towards the rivets.

Brian, That's what my car is going to look like!!:D

I love the red 289 in that Competition Cobra poster[:P]. It has the rivets and the riveted hood scoop, although they are painted over. I am seriously considering copying that car for my build:D.

Brent,

When I ordered my DP Kit I asked for the rivet on hood scoop. I love the look and was dead set on having rivets. Alan suggests using button-head screws (used on the scoop) rather than rivets because they are easier to remove (unscrew vs. drilling), but I did something a lit bit different. I drilled the holes the same size as required for a rivet (#8), then I removed the mandrel from the rivet and dropped it in the hole (kind of a lousy photo, but shown below). I used a 3/4" rivet and have never had a problem with one vibrating out - as a matter of fact, they don't budge at all. I can remove them when I wax the car, which is really nice [^].

The scariest part of the project is drilling the holes.... but a couple of beers before hand helps relieve the anxiety (kidding, of course). I used an ERA diagram that I would be happy to share if you are interested.

Brent I have rivets as well (I'm sure you have seen them. I drilled them before the paint job and put them in after the hood was painted. I was successful in controlling the rivet from doing a double tap but I also made a mask to put around each rivet hole so if I did a double tap it would hit the mask. (A donut with about 8-10 layers of masking tape that I moved from hole to hole) After doing all the AL and other stuff I felt I knew the tool well enough to do the job without mishaps --- but I still feel that doing that was the most enerving part of the build.

Sorry no pics in my file If you want some I'll take a few pics.

Phil.....Nice pics.
All you gotta do now is put an extra rivet
between all those you have in there now
and you will have the right ammount...31

I'm off to the UK for a couple of weeks.
Ya'll have a good time at Homecoming.

Somebody mentioned that it makes the car hard to wax. I don't wax my car so I am not worried about that.[:o)]

The holes are drilled [:O] Now to just finish polishing these damn rivets. Do you know how far a rivet flies when a 3500 rpm polishing wheel grabs it[?]

A long damn way!!!

LMAO!! After spending the afternoon with spinners in hand on a 8" wheel spinning 3500 RPM with nothing between me and it but air, just a funny mental image of the thing flying accross the room! When I have to polish little things like fastners, I screw them into a board and hang on!
