View Full Version : Realization - rubber is not forever

I've recently come to the painful realization that my tires have a finite life. My state of denial has been relegated to the fact that I'm running 16" wheels (255-50-R16s front and 275-50-R16s rear). I've been unable to identify any replacements. I really like my Compomotives and hate the thought of replacing them with 15s.

Tony,

Have you tried www.tirerack.com.
I'm sure the can help you. Cobra is not listed in the menu( I wonder why?) but just do a search on your tire sizes.
on a lighter note,
They Called me because when I placed my order the car was listed as a 66 Ford Mustang and he said that the tires wouldn't fit that car. (295.50.15 [8D]<img src=images/icon_speech_duh.gif border=0 width=23 height=15 alt=Insert Speech Icon: Duh!>)
So I expained to him what I had and told him they need to list Cobras in their Menu. but anyway I straighten him out and got my tires.:D
Now I'm running 15" wheels but I'm sure they can help you.

Randy, I've consigned myself to having to reduce the front width from 255 to 245. Quite frankly, the car will probably be easier to steer. I really don't want to reduce the width in the rear (not that I ever intentionally cause the rear tires to spin unnecessarily). I see that the 295s are still in production. The question is, will they fit? How's the noggin?

Hey guys. I'm running 245/50/16 front and 275/50/16 - can't get the Comp T/A's I have anymore. Last time I checked a 295 would fit in the rear. Not sure if it might be different for an FIA...?

I'm not in the market for new tires yet, but I also have 16 TAs -- mine are 245 in front and 295 in the rear (50R16)They work fine for me.

Looks like 245/295 is the ticket. Jason, have you been wearing my H.C. shirt?

Actually I added yours and Randy's to the piles of towels in the dog room ... makes it a bit more comfortable for them. :)

I just ordered the 245/60-15 front and 275/60-15 rear (Yokos) for new build. Got to see all combos at homecoming.
The wide 295/50 look great from the rear but the 275/60 fills the wheel well taller from the side view. Guess the look is just personal taste. Can't speak for the performance yet.

If I did the math right, the tire sidewalls for the 275/60s are 6.5" (.6x275/25.4). 295/50s are 6.8" (.6x295/25.4+ additional 1" diameter for 16" rims). I should be good to go.

Tony,

I did not catch why you are making adjustments based on the wheel diameter. This does not seem to bear on the sidewall height. The sidewall height is based on a percentage (50 or 60) of the overall tire width as measured on the industry standard "measuring rim" for the specific tire size in question. I would have guessed 6.5" and 5.8" for the 60 and 50 series tires respectively... am I leaving something out?

I was reacting to Twanita's comment about how the 275/60s on 15" rims filled the fender well perfectly. My point was that the 295/50s on 16" rims should come out almost the same. I'm not making adjustments, just rationalizing how the 295s will work well since I can't find any replacement 275/50s for my 16" wheels.

OK, I see... overall diameter... I get 27.99 for the 275/60-15 and 27.61 for the 295/50-16 in broad terms. Is this consistent with your calcs? Sounds like you have it down... sorry for the confusion ;).

I'm just glad I don't have to replace my Compomotives due to a limited availabilty of 16" tires. I stopped by the Compomotive vendor booth at the Carlisle Show a couple of weeks ago and we're talking some serious cash for new 15" wheels (that's of course with adapters and knockoffs).
