Hey guys, I am a brand new member of the Unique Forum although I have had a car since 2000 (I hate computers). My car was the solid dark green 289 that was sitting by the gate at Homecoming 06. After seeing the rest of you and your beautiful cars, I have decided that I need to add some pizzazz to mine. My first thought was to add a FIA nose stripe. I looked at 3 or 4 nose stripes at Homecoming and none of them were exactly the same. Does anyone know what the correct dimensions are for the nose stripe? Thanks!!!

Don:
I have seen two different specs for the FIA stripes: some say 5" wide, some say 6" wide. When we did mine, I went with 5" wide and based the placement on as many old photos as I could find.

I got the placement of the stripe right, but I should have gone with the 6" width, as in my opinion, my stripe is too narrow. If I do it again, I'll go with the 6". In addition, I think they are supposed to flare out a little bit as they trail off the front fenders, but I was never too crazy about that, so I just kept mine the same width all the way across.

Here's what mine looks like:

Russ:

Thanks! Some of the ones I saw at Homecoming were 5" & some were 6" wide just in front of the hood and they all flared out at the fender lip. I think I will take your suggestion and go with 6 ", with a slight flare at the fender lip.

Russ is right on, FIA stripes appeared on cars at either 6" or 5" in width. The stripes seen on the Homecoming cars are all 6" if memory serves. With regards to stripes 'flaring' at the ends, this is an optical illusion created by taking the stripe into the wheel well at a point that is approximately tangent to the opening.

Ours will be 6" and painted into the wheel opening as described above.

Brian:
Are you sure about the optical illusion thing? If you look at the image of Butch's car that Eliminator posted above, it appears that the stripe definitely gets wider as it trails of the flare.

i think nolastyankee is correct, yes if you measure along the wheel well it will be more than 6 inches but at any 90 degree measurement it will be 6"
