vacuum leak

my motor started running rough while out on a long drive this weekend, my neighbor/mechanic diagnoised a vacuum leak at the carb to intake manifold gasket. Hopefully all i need to do is replace the gasket. My question is- How will i know if any damage was caused to the valves or pistons due to running lean?

Odds are you are just fine. You could run a compression or a leak down test. Also, watch the vacuum gauge, if steady at idle without any large swings, it should be fine.
