View Full Version : Part 12 – Headers and Sidepipes

My car had been previously fitted with custom headers and sidepipes from Sanderson in South San Francisco; the headers were one piece from the heads all the way out the side of the body and connected to the sidepipes with a flange just below the front edge of the door. I didn’t like the looks of this and decided to use the standard Unique 427 sidepipes. Although it would have been easier to just order the proper headers from Unique, I decided to use the headers I had and fit them to the sidepipes. Making a flange was the easy part, welding it to the header pipes in the exact location was a little trickier. With the sidepipes installed on the car I fabricated a guide that when clamped to the frame would show the exact location of the sidepipe flange. This guide could be removed and reattached to the frame as necessary to line up the header pipes.

Without too much effort, and the help of the guide, I was able to line up the flange and the header pipes and tack weld them together.

I then cut off the excess pipe and finished the welding.

Tony, It's alway fun for me to get away from the "work" side of life. :)
